Bringing a new child into the world is a dream that most
couples share. But for some, turning that dream into reality
has become a painful, heart-breaking, and expensive nightmare.
Infertility, or the inability to conceive during the course
of normal sexual activity, affects about 20% of all couples
world wide. In America alone, about 1 in 5 couples is affected.
And the number is growing.

Causes of Infertility
Until recently, if a couple was unable to conceive, the
woman was considered ‘infertile’. Now, however,
it is generally recognized within the medical community
that, in 40% of the cases, the problem lies with the male.
In about 35 – 40% of the cases, the failure to reproduce
is directly attributable to the female.
Female Infertility: Other than a minor structural defect
which, in most cases, can be corrected, the most common
cause of infertility in women is the failure of the ovaries
to release a mature egg. Other causes include: endometriosis,
ovulation problems, poor egg quality, ovarian cysts, and
tube blockages.
Male Infertility: The most common cause of male infertility
is the inability to produce adequate numbers of healthy
sperm. Even with a normal sperm count, reduced fertility
can occur in men through: the absence of sperm in semen,
lack of active movement, abnormal shape and size, or a
clumping of sperm.
Conventional Treatments
Up until now, treatment options for infertile couples
have been expensive, invasive in many cases, and time-consuming.
They have also placed a great deal of stress on relationships.
Results have varied widely.
Conventional treatment for infertility today consists
of one or more of the following:
- Prescription drug therapy
- Hormonal injections
- Sperm injection (ICSI)
- In vitro fertilization (IVF)
All are lengthy procedures and very costly. In vitro fertilization,
for example, can cost up to $10,000 for one course of
treatment and it is not unusual for couples to go through
several cycles of treatment at a cost of $50,000.
